About FAS

Discover our heritage

It all began as a dream in 1962, when a team of selfless volunteers in Chembur came together on Republic Day to start a cultural society for the promotion of classical music, dance and drama. A temporary office was set up in a small garage on 15th Road, and the first programme took shape a year later.

Shamianas at the Gandhi Maidan soon hosted monthly programmes, and in 1964 the first Annual Festival of Music, Dance and Drama played to packed audiences.

As membership swelled, so did the ambition to build an auditorium dedicated to the rasikas of Mumbai — named after the late founder, Mr Sivaswamy, and made possible by generous sponsors including the Transworld Group of Companies.

Today the Fine Arts Academy of Music and Dance is a temple of learning for around 1,350 students, and our outreach programmes carry the tradition to students around the world.
